Camp History

Somerset Christian Camps has been running for 27 years, previously under the name "Counties Summer Camp" and the leadership and guidance of Mike and Su Strange. In 2008, Mike and Su passed the baton to a younger generation, who for many, Camp has been an intergral part of their Christian life.

1990 was the first year of Camp and things were a bit different back then! Held in a small field on the edge of Cheddar, with only a marquee and one cold shower, it really was back to basics stuff!

Ten years later in 2000, Camp became a little more refined, with the move to Kingsdon Manor School, near Somerton. It was a fantastic upgrade with swimming pool, hot showers and more outside space than was needed!

The future of Kingsdon Manor was very uncertain, so with a change in leadership, a change in venue seemed a sensible idea too. At the end of 2007, we knew Camp 2008 would happen, but had no idea where or how! After an announcement at the end of the week, one of the children's parents approached Mike and Su with news that was very welcome - they just happened to be housemasters at Kingsweston House for Millfield School.

2008 saw many changes for Camp as we moved to the new site, and although the weather couldn't have been worse, it showed that nothing could get in the way of God's plans for the Camps to continue.
